John Bowman
Underwriter
John Bowman serves as Underwriter at Phoenix Capital Solutions, responsible for helping lead the initial underwriting evaluation on new deal submissions and coordinating the specialist analyst team — Financial Analysts, Legal Analyst, and Market/Credit Analyst — whose work feeds into each credit memorandum. As the deal-level quarterback of the underwriting process, John is accountable for the quality, consistency, and completeness of every credit package Phoenix Capital produces.
John is a credit and mortgage underwriting professional who most recently served as Credit Underwriter at Paychex, Inc., one of the country's largest providers of human resources and financial services to small and medium-sized businesses. In that role he researched and wrote up client financial condition analyses based on financial information, credit data, and existing contracts; reviewed guarantor personal and business financials including tax returns, corporate returns, Equifax reports, balance sheets, and income statements to determine creditworthiness; researched UCC filings and federal and state tax liens; analyzed accounts receivable aging and end-debtor concentration; and prepared Client Approval Memoranda for presentation to senior management. That workflow — intake, financial review, lien research, creditworthiness assessment, and formal write-up — maps precisely to what the Underwriter role at Phoenix Capital requires on every transaction.
Prior to his role at Paychex, John served as Accountant and Credit Analyst at Birnbaum Companies, a commercial real estate and investment firm, where he performed general accounting functions, analyzed financial accounts and accounting data to support real estate investment decisions, developed financial packets for commercial property lessees, pulled credit reports, reviewed financial statements and tax returns to assess tenant financial health, and assisted in evaluating payment terms and rates for owner-financed sales — giving him direct exposure to the seller-finance transaction environment that Phoenix Capital operates within.
John holds the NAMU-CMU designation — Certified Mortgage Underwriter — from the National Association of Mortgage Underwriters. This certification reflects formal, structured training in mortgage underwriting standards, including income analysis, asset verification, credit analysis, loan eligibility determination under Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA guidelines, and the calculation of key underwriting ratios including loan-to-value and debt-to-income. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a Financial Planning Track from St. John Fisher University’s School of Business, an AACSB-accredited institution.
At Phoenix Capital, John's underwriting work is the analytical gateway through which every prospective deal must pass before it can move toward closing. His assessments protect the interests of sellers who are relying on the note's structural integrity, investors who will eventually hold the placed assets, and the firm's own reputation for consistent credit quality. For clients and partners who interact with Phoenix Capital, John's role ensures that every transaction the firm advances has been evaluated rigorously, documented thoroughly, and presented in a format that institutional counterparties can stand behind.
